Sandra VanZandt, in association with the Oklahoma Arts Council
will be working on a Kate Bernard Monument very soon.
The Kate Barnard sculpture is located on the first floor
Southeast Foyer inside the State Capitol in Oklahoma City. The dedication was
May 15, 2001.
Kate Barnard, in 1907, became the first woman to win statewide
elective office in the United States. She held the office of Commissioner of
Charities and Corrections for 2 terms. She was a key figure in the enactment of
a compulsory education law with provision for state payments to widows
dependant on their Children's earnings, of legislation implementing the
constitutional ban on child labor, of laws aimed at unsafe working conditions
and the "blacklisting" of union men. |
